Steps to Respect (STR)

What is Steps to Respect?
The Steps to Respect program is a literature based curriculum and uses the book Yang the Third and Her Impossible Family by Leslie Namioka. STR in the Rainbow Program assists children in 3rd - 5th grades learn the following skills: Friendship skills, Assertiveness, Bystander Power, and Respecting Cultural Differences. The children meet in groups of 2-4 students for 45 minutes for a period of 16 weeks. During this time, the children work through the STR curriculum and have free-choice play time after the lessons to work, in a small setting, on the newly acquired skills. 
How does the paraprofessional interact with the students ?

The paraprofessional guides the students through lessons and then allows non-directed, free-choice playtime. During free-choice play, the paraprofessional can help support the children while they are playing by reinforcing lesson skills. The paraprofessional is also trained in reflective, non-directive play techniques that allow the children to take control of their play which assists them in working through feelings and emotions while building self-esteem and confidence. This also supports the children in applying the newly acquired skills on their own without direct adult intervention as they process their own actions and words. During the session, the paraprofessional may play with the children or may observe the children’s play - this is determined by the children in the session.
Does the paraprofessional provide direct counseling or therapy?

Please note that the Rainbow Program does not provide therapy or counseling nor does the paraprofessional directly engage in dialogue related to events that happened outside the Rainbow Room. This requires a more direct service or support.
Who can benefit from Steps to Respect ?

While the program is geared toward supporting children struggling with friendship skills and behavioral issues, most children may benefit from the small group interactions with peers and from adult attention.
